My Year in Review: 2024

Ever feel like your life is a never-ending to-do list? Buckle up, because 2024 was a wild ride for me, a chaotic blend of ultra-marathons and business challenges. From pacing marathon runners in Bandung to conquering mountains in Bali, I'm still trying to figure out how I survived (and maybe even thrived!). Here's the story of my year, month by insane month:

January: New Beginnings and Feeling Thankful

January was the start of a crazy year. I'm so grateful I got the chance to interview for Pocari Sweat Pacer. I tried to show them that I'm a long-distance runner and really want to help other runners as a pacer. At Suitmedia, we were also very excited about our new talent development program. One of the best things was our new e-learning platform, Rocketversity. It's a place where our team can learn and grow.

2024 : Year of Ultra

February: Building Momentum, Inside and Out

February was about making new friends and growing sense of purpose. Meeting the other new pacers for the first time was awesome. We all shared the same excitement and a little bit of nervousness for what was coming. I'm also grateful that Suitmedia kept pushing our wellness program, SuitRun and SuitSports. We even worked with a wellness startup to make sure everyone was healthy, both physically and mentally. Plus, we got a new client, a global fitness brand! I'm so thankful they trusted us.

My Year in Review: 2023

In 2023, I found myself becoming more involved in running, as reflected in my blog posts this year. This post serves as my annual reflection on the events of 2023. I hope we can extract some lessons from these experiences.

2023 : Year of Running

January

As the new year started, we got busy planning and setting goals for 2023. Alongside our work, I made time for running. On January 1st, I ran 23 kilometers to celebrate the beginning of the year. Also, I started training for a marathon and accomplished something big: I ran over 30 kilometers for the first time ever. These achievements gave me a boost of energy and determination for the year ahead, both in my personal life and in leading Suitmedia.

February

It was a month filled with new challenges and exciting experiences. I continued to push my limits in running, achieving a significant milestone by conquering a route with over 1000 meters of elevation gain for the first time. The next day, I participated in the Run Against Cancer (RAC) 2023 event in Semarang, completing a 10-kilometer run to contribute to this meaningful cause. As part of my marathon training journey, I reached a peak distance of 38 kilometers, pushing through both physical and mental barriers in preparation for my debut marathon.

March

It was an unforgettable month filled with significant milestones and exciting adventures. I achieved a significant milestone by completing my debut marathon at the Tokyo Marathon 2023, a journey filled with determination and triumph. Following this exhilarating experience, I embarked on a nostalgic journey to South Korea after several years, exploring the vibrant cities of Busan, Daegu, and Seoul. The highlight of my time in South Korea was reuniting with my KAIST classmates to celebrate a decade of friendship, reminiscing about old times and creating new memories together. In Seoul, I also had the opportunity to participate in the half marathon event (R2) of the Seoul Marathon 2023, adding another memorable race to my repertoire.  To cap off the month in style, I traveled back to Japan to meet my girlfriend, immersing ourselves in the enchanting landscapes and rich heritage of Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, and Tokyo.

My Year in Review: 2022

Year 2022 was a less productive year for me in terms of blogging, as I only managed to write two articles, both of which were about remote work (🇬🇧) and running (🇮🇩). This was an unexpected result for me, as I had hoped to be more productive and to write more articles on a variety of topics. Despite this, I learned a lot about remote work and running, and I was able to share my insights with others through my articles.

January

Starting the new year with positive activities such as running, cycling, and volunteering can be a great way to set a positive tone for the year ahead. Exercise is not only good for your physical health, but it can also have a positive impact on your mental health and well-being.

I started the first day of this year with running 22 km to celebrate the new year. I commited to make a new habit: running half marathon at least once a month.

At work we emphasized again on the importance of following remote-work communication protocol which prioritize written documentation both in dedicated work chat tools and in project management tools. I've been very strict about this rule and never hesitate to fire team members who can't get along.

In the first week of this year I checked one item from my bucket list: cycling Bandung-Jakarta-Bandung. In the first day I cycled from Bandung to Jakarta via Puncak, and I really enjoyed it. Then in the second day I cycled back from Jakarta to Bandung via Purwakarta. Unfortunately, I didn't finish the last 17 km because it was raining so hard, the road was too dark, and there were still a lot of big trucks. I hope I can repeat this trip again in the future with better conditions.

Volunteering is another great way to start the year off on a positive note. By giving back to your community and helping others, you can feel a sense of purpose and fulfillment that can carry over into other areas of your life.

This month I returned to volunteer in Kelas Inspirasi Lombok. It was amazing experience and it's always good to catchup with old friends who are also passionate in education volunteering.

Engaging in physical activity like running or cycling can help you feel more energized, boost your mood, and reduce stress and anxiety. This month I also managed to cycle around Lombok and visited Mandalika beach by bike. I was a great experience!

Whether you choose to run a half-marathon, go on a cycling adventure, or volunteer at a local charity, starting the year off with positive activities can help set the stage for a happy and fulfilling year.

My Year in Review: 2021

"The difference between good and great is often an extra round of revision." – James Clear

Year 2021 feels like going very fast. Here we are already in the last day of the year and this is my annual blog post about what happened in my life in 2021, what went well, and what went wrong. I hope we can learn something from this.

January

I was still in Bali, enjoying my long stay there and re-setting my lifestyle. I spent new year's eve by going to bed early like what I usually did while I was there. In the first day of the year, I woke up early and went to Sanur to see the first sunrise of the year and then did running for 5 km. It wasn't that far because I wasn't into running at that time.

I started eating consciously, no diet anymore but everything is well-considered. I started sleeping in scheduled time, going bed early, and waking up early. I started exercising regularly, especially cycling and running. I rode my bike around 973 km while I was staying in Bali.

Lesson learned: I believe new year's resolutions don't work. Habits and systems can. So I focus building good habits and supporting systems, so I can achieve goals. It's not only about work, but also about my physical and mental health.

My Year in Review: 2020

It never gets easier, you just get better. 💪

This year is not that good for almost everyone. Many people lost their loved ones due to health situation. Many people also lost their jobs due to economic crisis.

Year 2020 showed us what essentials in our life and why we should be grateful. If we are still alive and have good relationship with our loved ones, these are more than enough to be thankful.

This blog post is an annual review of what happened in my life in 2020, what went well and what didn't go well, so I can learn something from the past year experiences.

Suitmedia Goes to Bali (2020)

January

I spent end-year vacation in Bali to attend my friend's wedding, returned to Jakarta on January 1st, and was greeted a flood. Our flight couldn't land at HLP and had to land at CGK airport. 😅

This month I felt productive since I wrote summaries of two my favourite books : The E-Myth and ReWork. Those are two of the most influential books for my professional life.

February

On February 10, we had a blessing to have a company retreat in Bali. We stayed in Bali for 3 days and some people extended their holidays. I feel really grateful for working with my current teammates.

On February 19, I joined Kelas Inspirasi Bandung and this time I took role as teaching volunteer after three years of being facilitator. This volunteering event was also the only Kelas Inspirasi that I involved in 2020 because there is no direct interaction in school during pandemics.

I spent my new year's eve in Seminyak, Bali in a spontaneous end-of-year vacation, which I booked few hours before. I think it's a good idea to start a new year in a relaxing place, so we can think strategically what we should do in the upcoming 365 days.

At work, we finally had outing for the both business units together in Lembang, Bandung. It was two-days company gathering to know more about each other since we separated into two units. I learned that communication, collaboration, and good habits are very important for our growth, not only in professional life but also in personal life.

My Year in Review: 2018

This was the first time I started a new year without any resolution. Instead, I committed to do new habits: making my bed every morning, meditation, exercise, drinking less sugar, daily reading, and weekly charity. I used Habit Tracker app to monitor the progress, and finally.. I made it partly. Some habits were still lack of consistency. However, at least I made good progress.

At work, we went through 2017 with ups and downs. After working with more than a hundred projects, we took a break to have company gathering for both Jakarta and Bandung team.

We had two-days trip in Lembang and visited Dusun Bambu, Farm House, Floating Market, Gracia Spa, Kawah Putih, and Glamping Lake Side. For some people it was their first experience visiting Bandung and meeting Bandung team in person. Everyone had fun, and hopefully I could bring them to some farther place next time.

I started my volunteering activities in 2018 by joining Kelas Inspirasi Lombok. It was my second time participating in Lombok. This time we went to Kabupaten Lombok Utara, one of the most under-developed areas in Nusa Tenggara Barat. Despite the school infrastructure that was not good, the kids were very enthusiastic to go to school to meet their friends and teachers.

There was one person that inspired me the most in KI Lombok. He was Pak Luji Hartono, former head of village (kepala dusun) in Selengen, who really cares about his citizens. Whenever people in Selengen had some challenges (for example, it used to be very hard to find clean water there), Pak Luji worked hard to find the way either seeking government support or organizing local communities to work together to solve the problems. He was really the inspiring man in his village.

I think there is no better way to distract ourselves from negative things than doing a lot of productive works. It definitely helps us to move on to the next better things.

This month I volunteered in Kelas Inspirasi Lombok for the first time. As a teacher I shared about my profession and my life story to elementary students in MI Bilok Petung, Sembalun. FYI, Sembalun is a gateway village to hike to the famous Mount Rinjani.

It was also my first experience visiting Lombok island, so I took a leave for few days to travel around Gili Trawangan and southern part of Lombok. I think South Lombok (Tanjung Aan Beach, Merese Hill, Kuta Beach, Seger Beach, etc) will be as popular as Bali in the next decade if the development is progressing well.

My Year in Review: 2016

"Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years." — Bill Gates

The quote above is somehow true since 2016 was the year that I probably overestimated what I could achieve in one year. However, I'm still grateful for all positive things that happened last year. This blog post is just a documentation of my life in a year. I hope we can learn something from what we experienced in 2016.

New year started with some good things: short trip to Rancabali Tea Plantation, new episode of Sherlock, and 5th anniversary celebration of Indonesia Mengajar.

There was also a small indie music concert which featured my favourite local bands: White Shoes And The Couples Company, Payung Teduh, and Sore! All were performing in the same stage! Perfect! 👌🏽
